In July 1909, the passenger steamship SS Waratah disappeared while traveling from Durban, South Africa, to Cape Town. The ship carried over 200 passengers and crew and was considered one of the most modern vessels of its time. After leaving Durban, the Waratah was reportedly seen by another ship during rough weather, but it never reached its destination. No distress calls were received, and despite extensive search efforts, no confirmed wreckage was ever found. Some believed the ship may have been caught in a powerful storm or overturned by massive waves. Others pointed to strange reports from passengers who claimed the ship felt unstable before departure. The disappearance of the SS Waratah became one of the greatest maritime mysteries in Australian history, earning it the nickname “Australia’s Titanic.”
